What do we offer?

  • The Homework Club provides one-to-one tutoring to children in Grades 1 to 8 who have difficulty with reading, writing and/or math
  • A+ Book Club is geared to children in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 3 who struggle with reading and are able to work in small groups. Both programs are offered in French and English.

Our children’s programs are not government funded and therefore rely on individual and community donations.

Why are we needed?

The Homework Club and Book Club are designed for children with learning disabilities and are accessible to children from all four school boards in the Timmins area. Currently, 42% of Canadian adults between the ages of 16 and 65 have low literacy skills (ABC Life Literacy Canada).

In Northern Ontario, educational attainment is significantly lower than the provincial average. In the Cochrane District (Timmins area) 26.5% of adults aged 35-64 have not completed a certificate, diploma or degree, while the provincial average for the same cohort is 15% (Statistics Canada, 2006 Census). As a result, many parents lack the literacy skills and education to assist their children with their schoolwork.

What have we accomplished?

The children that have participated in the Homework Club and Book Club programs have improved their literacy skills and school performance, and demonstrated increased self-esteem and confidence.
